Rodney grew up surrounded by violence. Then, at the age of 17, he was blamed for it.

Rodney Derrickson was born and raised in the William Penn Projects in Chester, PA. He experienced tragedy at a young age when two of his siblings and grandmother were killed in a house fire. Though he tried to succeed in school, he was unable to receive the support needed to help him with his learning disabilities. He entered prison as a nearly-illiterate 17-year-old child, a new father, and an innocent man.

Rodney has spent more time behind bars than he has spent at home.

Over the 30 years of his incarceration, Rodney has maintained his innocence and worked on his case with the support of friends both in and outside of prison walls.

He educated himself, receiving his high school diploma and later becoming certified as a Paralegal, Peer Specialist, and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) facilitator, in addition to completing all required prison programs and other elective trainings. Rodney works hard to help other incarcerated individuals gain access to education, rehabilitation, and mentorship. He also cares deeply about the youth in his hometown of Chester, PA and makes yearly donations to the Chester Boys & Girls Club to give back to his community.

Rodney started a "Prisoners’ Lives Matter” campaign in Pennsylvania, as well as contributing his advocacy writing to various publications. He writes on behalf of all prisoners in Pennsylvania, arguing for reform and real rehabilitation.

His friends and family are so proud of his accomplishments, but want him to return home more than anything. Anyone who knows Rodney realizes how much more valuable he would be to society if he could continue his advocacy and mentorship as a free man.

30 years is too long a time to serve for a crime that he did not commit. Everyday that Rodney wakes up behind bars is an injustice to him, his family, and society as a whole.
